Course Description

The course offers a historical overview of nineteenth-century world theatre, focusing on major European countries (England, France, Russia, German-speaking regions) as well as the United States. It examines key developments in theatrical practice, dramaturgy, and their relationship to broader social, political, and intellectual contexts. Selected major playwrights such as Hugo, Gogol, Büchner, Strindberg, Ibsen, Chekhov, and Hauptmann are studied in detail. The course also highlights the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, emphasising continuity and transformation in theatrical forms and ideas.

After the completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • define and analyse key concepts in theatre theory and history 
  • identify major artistic and theatrical movements 
  • recognise and analyse dramaturgical techniques in dramatic texts 
  • understand the significance of key nineteenth-century plays 
  • compare theatrical developments across different countries 
  • develop and present a structured analysis of a theatrical work 
  • gain a comprehensive understanding of nineteenth-century world theatre
